So what is Aude Sapere?
“Aude Sapere” is the title I’ve given to my writing, most of which is set in my little fictional "Sapere" universe, and includes the Dauntless series. Although I’m not aspiring for anything loftier than self-publishing, a little consistency is nice, don’t you think?
(NB: Sapere does not include any fanfiction I might write; only my own creations. See below.)

What does it mean?
Although there are some variations on the precise translation, “Aude Sapere” (or “sapere aude”, as it may also be written) essentially means “dare to know” or “dare to be wise” in Latin.

Originally, I used “Dare to think for yourself” as a tagline for “Thunder Daughter”, a story in which the stranded heroine has to take control of her own destiny and finally learn to think for herself. It also had some relevance to “Good as Gold”, the story that followed, and after that it just… stuck!

What is this community for?
As I don’t imagine there’ll be an awful lot of foot traffic, this will be the “official” community for works set in my little fictional universe, without so much of the rubbish that ends up on my day-to-day journal.

I will therefore be posting about the slightly more “major” milestones here – for instance, “the first draft of Memento Mori is finally finished!” or “I’ve finished editing Thunder Daughter”. (I am debating also posting about when I have new chapters. Watch this space!)

Plus, of course, I’ll be posting when things are published! Different POD companies also have the occasional sales, so I may post to let people know if Blurb or Lulu or whoever are having a “25% off” sale, or something.

Please don’t think these are the only things allowed, though! If you have a question to ask, or comment to make, feel free to do so. The community is moderated, but I have it set up so that anyone can join and anyone can post entries; if you try and post something and it doesn’t show up, please let me know. (I don’t plan on deleting entries in the moderation queue without letting you know why, unless they’re obviously spam.)

Where can I find details on these stories without having to trawl through your writing journals?
Thunder Daughter | on Dreamwidth | on Livejournal
Good as Gold | on Dreamwidth | on Livejournal
Adverse Camber | on Dreamwidth | on Livejournal
Toccata and Fugue | on Dreamwidth | on Livejournal
Memento Mori | on Dreamwidth | on Livejournal
Memento Vivere | on Dreamwidth | on Livejournal
The Strangest Notion | on Dreamwidth | on Livejournal
Runs from Silence | on Dreamwidth

You said “major milestones”, so where can I find other updates on what else is going on?
These will (probably) continue to be posted on my “primary” journal/s - “Dreamwidthor “LiveJournal.

For smaller updates on the Dauntless series, please click here.
For smaller updates on Thunder Daughter, please click here.
For smaller updates on Good as Gold, please click here.
For smaller updates on Memento Mori, please click here.
For smaller updates on Memento Vivere, please click here.
For smaller updates on The Strangest Notion, please click here.
For smaller updates on Runs from Silence, please click here.

Why didn't you include Adverse Camber and Tocatta and Fugue in that list?
At the moment, they need quite a bit of work doing on the plot before I can finish them (and the plot will probably change a lot when I edit them, as well), so I'm calling them "on-hold", for now.

What about your other stories, like the “Blue AU”? Why don’t you mention them here?
Since they’re not strictly Sapere works, I wasn’t planning on putting any details here, but if there’s enough call for them I may change my mind? Otherwise you can check out the ginormous “Blue Masterlist” on my main journal, and there's more details about other projects on The Writing Index on my main journal/s.

Lastly…
This community is (sort of?) mirrored on Tumblr, for those who prefer that platform.

So, for the last few months I've been struggling to get onto LiveJournal. I can't access it in my lunchbreak because the work firewall blocks the site. I don't remember changing my password, but it tells me it's wrong. I attempt to get my password reset, and it tells me my email doesn't exist!

The only way I could get onto the site was via my iPad (which was conveniently still logged in), which obviously isn't super great for the manipulating of large volumes of text.

As I didn't feel comfortable leaving my content on a website I didn't have reliable access to, I have taken down most of my fiction from that platform (so the communities are now empty, with just placeholders to explain where things went to all the non-existent visitors). The only items still available are on my personal LJ, until such a time as I can take those down as well.

That is, this is readable, but not all species profiles have been finished. Incomplete profiles have not been uploaded; species are listed at the bottom of the entry.

The variety of creatures inhabiting the Sapere universe has fluctuated somewhat, down the years – some got amalgamated into others, some had total makeovers, some got ditched altogether – but I’m fairly happy with the list for now. Until another new one crops up!

I’m trying very hard not to make them all species from “planets of hats”. (If you’re not sure what that means, I would link to TV Tropes, but I know from experience that it’s very easy to get sucked into that site, and no-one reading this would ever come back, so I’m not going to make it easy for anyone.) Essentially, a Planet of Hats is a world where the culture is all the same, across the whole world; alien species “X” all have the same culture, the same belief system, eat the same food, etc. Just like all humans are all members of a monoculture, right? *cough*

The Sapere Galaxy - yes, my puns creep in all over the place.

keaalu: A word cloud generated from my novel "memento mori" (MM tagxedo)
[personal profile] keaalu
Remember your mortality

Hesger was once a gem of the Outer Rim; a young colony on a small forest world, important for its scientific prowess, and popular among holidaymakers for its beautiful scenery and health spas.
...all that was before the arrival of "Heff", Hesgeri haemorrhagic fever. Released accidentally by one of the teams researching a cure, the bioweapon tears unchecked through the population, in only a few years killing all but a handful of mutilated survivors calling themselves “blights”. Under a self-imposed planetwide quarantine, the technological revolution collapses, and the cities grow derelict, with even electricity and running water turning into nothing but a distant memory.
It is on this abandoned world that Blink, a lovelorn robot girl trying to find a place to belong, finds herself; abducted, dumped and stranded, after a failed attempt to break into the mysterious Kust Institute of Science. With a future that looks pretty bleak, a dying cross-dimensional being “gifts” her with a new, biological body – a gift that is meant to help her survive, but feels more like a curse.
Blink must now come to terms not just with her new body and newfound mortality, but also that she may be trapped on this world for the rest of her life, with no way to even tell her family what has happened, and in constant danger from those who... don't precisely have her best interests in mind. Perhaps most importantly, however, she and her new friends must figure out the hidden extra that came with Frond's unwanted gift – a hidden extra that might just save the planet.

In Print!

When I finish a piece of writing, I like to get it printed into a "proper book", usually by a print-on-demand publisher (Lulu, in this case). It makes it feel "properly finished", as it were. (Even though I haven't even touched the editing stage, haha.) It surprised me how physically big the book ended up being (A5 in size, and almost 2cm thick) - and the internal text isn't exactly huge! Although I suppose I should have expected it, at just over 170,000 words.

Tracking the fugitive Firewire all the way from their home planet, Celerity and Slipstream find themselves in the Telluvia system; a heavily populated holiday world for the rich and unprincipled. "Rescued" from the sewers by Nuori-deuchainn laboratories, Celerity finds herself thrust into the unwilling role of "specimen", to pay off her supposed debts.
It is up to Slipstream - angry and resentful, blaming her for everything that happened - to not only forgive his aunt, and rescue her from Madame Pabishka's talons before the gentle femme is completely redesigned and reprogrammed, but also somehow catch the fleeing criminal and save his sister, too.

Information and updates

"Adverse Camber" is a name I've had in my ideas list for years, and until now never really had a place to use it. It picks up from the end of "Future Tense" (in the Blue AU), although (luckily, since I've not finished that one, d'oh) you don't have to have read that one for it to make sense.
This story is still in progress. I am (very, very slowly) adding bits to it, but the plot needs some looking at.

01st November 2009 - work begins! Posting of the story has begun on Adverse Camber on LiveJournal. (Slightly clunky username, for which I apologise! The ones I wanted were taken.) As ever, will contains the "raw", unedited version, exactly as uploaded during NaNoWriMo.

07th May 2013 - noticed that the owner of the "adverse_camber" username on LiveJournal at some point in the past deleted their account. As I found "adverse0camber" somewhat annoying, I took advantage of it and changed the community name.

13th June 2013 - finally got around to converting the adverse_camber journal to a community. It doesn't mean the thing will be updated any faster, it just means that if/when a chapter is ready, I don't have to log out, post, log back OUT then back IN to my main account to link to it from other journals, etc etc. Posting is moderated, but not restricted to members only.

--------------------------------------------

The Story

Each chapter of "Adverse Camber" is posted on Livejournal or Dreamwidth as it becomes available. These two communities have moderated posting, but open membership, if you have any questions or comments.

For some reason, Dreamwidth doesn't seem to like italics very much - I'm not sure why it does it, but every now and then it'll put line breaks in where I don't want them, in the middle of blocks of text just after an italicised portion, and I can't seem to get rid of them. (As the actual code is fine.) I hope it's not too distracting.

"Good as Gold" follows straight on from "Thunder Daughter"; Sei's actions in the eumin "Bubble City" on the bottom of ia'Maura's ocean have left him with plenty of enemies - and ones who'll stop at nothing to punish him for his supposed infractions.

When his wife and twin brother are rumoured to have been killed in a devastating explosion, Sei realises that he must personally track down and stop the perpetrator, before he himself is killed - or worse.

(Technically, I "won" this one as I got to the winning 50,000 words, but because my brain was trying to cope with writing this AND "Warped" (which I was enjoying more), things went a bit pear shaped and I didn't manage to finish it. I do still plan on getting it completed - see below.)

Information and updates

1st November 2012 - I have resumed work on this story, using it as my NaNoWriMo for this year.

3rd May 2013 - the LJ community I was hosting this story on has had a slight name-change, since the original owner of "good_as_gold" deleted their journal and the name was made available again. (Which I'm really quite glad about, as having numbers on each end of "0good_as_gold0" bothered me.) The old name should divert to the new one, as I'm sure I missed some links.

Sei and Mirii are on "holiday" - at least, that's the idea, although it's more a plan of Sei's to try and get Mirii to think more for herself. When their Vaneship is hit by lightning over the ocean, however, and they're separated, it becomes far steeper a learning curve than he anticipated!
Sei, too heavy to swim, sinks to the bottom of the ocean, where he is rescued by a steam-age society living in a city in a giant bubble on the ocean floor. The people of the bubble have lived cramped lives in their private, manufactured hell for centuries, unable to escape and slowly self-destructing through poverty and a bad fish diet. Sei must somehow find a way out - simultaneously avoiding those who have alternate plans in mind for the "big battery"...
Mirii, meanwhile, is adopted by one of the native tribes; a sophisticated, pre-industrial race with a heavy reliance on pomp and circumstance, and plentiful ritual sacrifice. Seeing their "Thunder Daughter" emerge from the ocean at the start of the new year, painted a rich, glowing gold by the sun after a heavy thunderstorm, they see it as a blessing. Mirii sees it as rather frightening - especially when they finally reveal their plans for her...

Information and updates

Back in August 2007, I (re-)discovered "NaNoWriMo"; I forget exactly what reminded me in the first place (I think I saw someone mention it on a forum I frequented at the time?), but I decided that this year would be the year I tried it! I'd toyed with the idea before, and first read about it way back in university in about 2001, but never actually went for it.
In a way, I wanted this NaNoWriMo to be a bit of an experiment - lots of random themes and concepts woven together to make something (hopefully) interesting, to avoid writing the same basic story with a few twists all over again. I don't know how well I succeeded, as I was still only working on the ideas I came up with...

7th December 2007 - the first draft is completed!

3rd May 2013 - I am slowly working on editing this, although progress is quite fragmented as I have to fit it around my real job. I have also converted the old "Thunder Daughter" personal journal on LJ to a community, to make it easier to update. The story is still on there, in its highly clunky old format, for posterity's sake. (The finished article, I hope, will be a lot better, with less gaping plot-holes and terrible dialogue!)

--------------------------------------------

The Story

This is currently undergoing a lot of heavy editing before I self-publish it. The somewhat clunky 2007 first draft is still available on the LiveJournal username where I first uploaded it and a Dreamwidth mirror. (Start at Chapter One on Livejournal or Dreamwidth.)

Welcome to the first proper post of the community! (At blooming last, haha?) I finally have something worth saying.

The first draft of "Memento Mori" is complete!

In celebration of the fact that I've actually finished something (that isn't fanfiction), I have ordered myself a properly printed, bound copy of it from Lulu. A "proper book"! That I haven't had to print out and sew together myself. (Actually, I bought two copies, in case anyone from work etc wants to read it. ¬_¬)

This required me to give it a nice cover, as well. Frustratingly, I couldn't find the images of dried bracken I wanted to put on it, but it doesn't look too bad, ne?

Cover images under the cut )

Now the long process of editing begins. *shifty eyes*

Before I edit this novel, I think I might try and finish "Good as Gold" first, however - it explains a little about the haemorrhagic fevers.

NB: This would have been posted earlier, but I was having issues getting it to work.

Edit: Unfortunately, LJ have restructured how their "scrapbook" function works, and what used to be nice-sized thumbnails have gone all misshapen.
